To the editor:
As a person who has fought for common sense gun laws ever since the Sandy Hook shooting massacre, I was disgusted when I heard about the permitless concealed carry bill (AB247/SB169) that was recently introduced by Republicans and co-sponsored by Sen. Howard Marklein.
It would remove the training requirements and permit system currently in place in Wisconsin and spits in the face of common sense, simply to please the gun lobby.
Under current law, Wisconsin's K-12 school buildings and grounds are automatically gun free. This bill would force schools wishing to prohibit guns to post signs at every entrance or access point to school grounds; any school that fails to follow the requirements would automatically allow guns on the property.
Schools are a place for kids to learn in a safe environment. Adding guns to the mix is wrong, dangerous, and puts kids at risk. The only people who should be allowed to carry a gun on school grounds are law enforcement, who have extensive training. As the son of a teacher and brother of a current Monroe High School student, my fear for their safety would go to another level if this bill becomes law.
This bill also repeals prohibitions on concealed weapons in police stations, sheriff's offices, any secured unit or secured portion of a mental health institute, beyond a security checkpoint in an airport, and in courthouses. None of these areas make any sense to allow concealed carry, especially in sensitive places like courthouses. Courthouses already have trained armed security personnel to protect citizens.
I'm not going to stop working until common sense prevails. For example, 85 percent of Wisconsinites support universal background checks for all gun sales, and 91 percent of Wisconsinites - including 86 percent of gun owners - support the current law that requires Wisconsin residents to get a permit to carry a hidden, loaded gun in public. Lifting the training requirements and permit system for concealed carry is wrong. I'm not against guns, but like the majority of my fellow Wisconsinites, I'm for common sense.
Please make your voices heard to stop this terrible bill. I'm writing to all Monroe residents, and surrounding communities, to reach out to your state assembly and state senate representatives, and voice your concerns with permitless carry. This bill is extreme and is not what the people of Wisconsin are asking for.
