To the editor:
I am a senior at Monroe High School, and I live in the 51st State Assembly. The timing could never be better for me to cast my first vote in support of a great candidate, Jeff Wright.
Jeff Wright believes in sufficient state funding for our public schools. In the past five years, the Monroe School District has experienced almost $1.5 million dollars less in state funding in part due to the voucher school program that has expanded statewide. This is money that has been given to unaccountable private schools, none of which even exist in the 51st Assembly District. This forces communities like ours, in Monroe, to hold referendums to make up for these shortcomings.
If the Monroe School District referendum fails, some of the consequences include significant reductions in staffing at all district schools, increases in class sizes, reductions in programming for at-risk students and students with disabilities, elimination of extracurricular programs, and many other educational opportunities that make this a great school district. Cuts like these will devastate our school district and greatly hinder the learning environment. Furthermore, it could cost hardworking district employees their jobs. People who live in and around the community of Monroe and spend their earnings here as well. Property and home values may decrease and families may think twice about moving to this community if our school district is running on a bare bones budget.
In my last year of high school, I now realize more than ever that strong public schools are essential to the foundation of our economy and democracy. We need a leader in our state assembly with Jeff Wright's experience as an assistant superintendent, principal, and teacher to be a voice for our public schools. Jeff Wright exemplifies the type of leader the 51st Assembly District needs.
