From Susie Speer

Executive director, United Way of Green County, Inc.

The United Way is working to provide a wide range of programs that are focused to address the most critical needs of people in our community. Programs are not focused on helping just one segment of our population or one community within Green County. They are focused on providing help for families and for individuals, for children and for the aging, for men and for women. United Way funded programs are working to help people in every Green County community .... every day.

It's not about the money we raise; it's about the help people receive because of the money we raise. As we work to improve lives and to strengthen our community, we don't only provide funding for important local programs. We work as an active community partner with local health and human service organizations, with government agency representatives, area school districts, local law enforcement, health providers, religious organizations, financial advisors and area businesses to both identify and to solve community problems more effectively and more efficiently.

This year Green County School district administrators are serving as our campaign chairs to share information about the important ways that United Way funding provides help for kids in their school districts. Programs are broad-based and range from providing enrichment opportunities to meeting basic needs. Programs include early childcare; sports, recreational and scouting opportunities; free dental care; mentoring, tutoring and counseling and exposure to the arts. Other programs focused to address current behavioral trends provide parenting skills classes for families at risk to help create safe homes for kids; preventive education programs to teach appropriate ways to solve problems without the use of violence; programs that teach acceptable relationship and dating behavior and programs to discourage bullying and promote self-esteem. When needed, programs work to meet the most basic needs of our kids providing food, clothing and shelter.

The United Way is a local organization, driven by local volunteers. When you contribute to the United Way of Green County, 98.8 cents of every dollar stays in Green County to help people here.

If you have already made your tax-deductible contribution to the United Way this year, we thank you. If you have not we hope that you will consider contributing today. Please give to the United Way, P.O. Box 511, Monroe, WI 53566.
