To the editor:
The National Association of Letter Carriers, along with the National Association of Rural Carriers and with cooperation from the United States Postal Service, would like to ask for your participation in the largest single-day food drive in the United States. The food drive is scheduled for Saturday, May 12th. This is the 26th annual food drive, and the 71 million pounds of food collected throughout the United States last year brought the total collected to over 1.5 billion pounds.
One in five families are food insecure in the United States, and one in four of those people are children, which is a very startling statistic. Our role is even more vital this year as families in unprecedented numbers are struggling to make ends meet. The food pantry shelves have been emptied from the Holiday Food Drives. This is a critical time of year for food insecure children. School food programs that ensure that children are adequately fed during the school year are not available in the summer months.
You can help by placing nonperishable food items in the blue bags provided, that will be delivered in your mail the week before the food drive. Put your donations by your mailbox on Saturday, May 12th, and your letter carrier will make sure that it is donated to the Green County Food Pantry, right here in Monroe.
Please help us Stamp Out Hunger on May 12th!
