Letter to the Editor: Give the citizens a voice

Monroe

To the editor:

The Dec. 12, 2017, Citizens United Referendum article in Monroe Times was remarkable for the wrong reason. Did 14 supervisors, who represent our citizenry, vote no because they didn't understand or they are pushing a partisan agenda?

Supervisor Kubly may not understand that, yes this is a state and federal issue, but that is why it is on the county ballot. To get an issue on a state or federal ballot, the issue has to be proven popular or officials will rightly not bother with the issue. Same at the state. Same at the county level.

To convince county officials of its popularity, Green County United to Amend approached a number of city, village and town boards to put the issue to a ballot, which cost them little but they thought the citizens should have a voice. It passed by an average of over 80 percent support. Think of that! Eighty percent! This support got it on the county ballot. A number of Wisconsin counties have passed ballot referendums in support of a state ballot.

Why is a county referendum important? Partisans of both parties, but especially Republicans now, want no part of this issue, because it will lead to their cash trough being dried up. Pay for Play is currently what runs state political decisions, and every politician will deny that it happens that way, lying to your face. Look at the effect anonymous out of state Big Money has had on Wisconsin politics!

When a large number of counties pass ballot initiatives, the state will be pushed into holding a state referendum because of the overwhelming support of the citizens. If they had the intestinal fortitude to ask their constituents, the answer would be "Yes, give us a voice!"

Nineteen states have already passed statewide ballots supporting this issue. When 38 states show support, politicians will act, if for no other reason than to protect themselves from upset voters.

Ignorance is no excuse! Information about Green County United to Amend, South Central UTA, and Wisconsin UTA is out there on the internet. Please read, otherwise people will rightly think that you are partisan, protecting the Status Quo.

Supervisor Kubly is wrong to think it is a waste of money. It is the price of freedom. Are 14 supervisors afraid to allow citizens to express themselves? Give us a voice.
