Letter to the Editor: Focusing on the big picture

To the editor:

We live in a state and country controlled entirely by Republicans. If you are hunting for reasons why they should not be in control of government, you have a target-rich environment. This past week alone we learned that members of Trump's cabinet think they can charter private jets and take lavish trips at taxpayer expense. Also, we find out that the Republican tax reform of Paul Ryan and company actually means massive tax cuts for the likes of Trump and his rich cronies, with only a dog bone, maybe, to middle class Americans. In Wisconsin they kicked the funding for roads down the road once again, and now Republicans in the State Senate think it's OK to carry concealed firearms without training. They keep giving us more reasons every day and I can't keep up with it. But I try to stay focused on the big picture, and I wish the leaders of the Democratic Party would too. As the Republicans continue to prove how corrupt, incompetent, and mean spirited they are, Democrats would do best by focusing on what they can do for us if we put them back in charge.

I wish they would all follow the lead of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and double down on real Progressive Populism (not the fake populism of Donald Trump). I wish they would advocate for single payer health care for all, i.e. a fully funded Medicare for all, fully funding public schools, real investing in our public infrastructure and making the minimum wage a real living wage. These policies are what the vast majority of rank and file Democrats want from our government. And it's what we want to hear Democratic leaders and candidates talk about. These things can be done, and paid for, if we fix our system of taxes the right way, by raising the taxes on the wealthiest among us, in stark contrast to what Trump and Ryan and Senator Ron Johnson and the rest of the Republicans are plotting to do right now.
