To the editor:

"What is the difference between small dairy operations and large-scale dairy operations in Wisconsin?" That was the title of a one-page advertisement in the Monroe Times paid for by a businessman from Nebraska. Tuls, touting that his business model is the way of the future, infers that it is somehow OK for family farms to be lost.

It is shameful that a businessman from Nebraska is allowed to move in; upset the current supply chain; drive down the price of milk; put local farmers out of business; and proudly advertise about it in the paper.

It is shameful that the state of Wisconsin tries to limit local government say in whether or not these operations move in.

It is time that the Green County supervisors stand up to outside business interests and stand with their constituents who don't want to see the landscape of Green County change. Stand up for the small dairy farmers who are struggling to stay in business because of an influx of cheap milk.

My answer to Tuls' question is this: The difference between small- and large-scale operations like his proposed 5,800 cow dairy is the people; their relationship with local markets; their place at the table of our restaurants and churches; their children in our schools; their past, present and future in our community.
