As we are thinking ahead to the November election, I have told myself to wake up and pay attention. Recent elections have taught me that elections matter - they do have consequences. Local and statewide elections are perhaps more important than national because their results so closely touch our lives. So ... I pay attention. It is important to cast a well-informed vote.
This year we in District 51 have an exceptional candidate for State Assembly - Dick Cates of Spring Green. Mr. Cates says "I am running to bring civility and cooperation to the Legislature" Well, how nice that would be. He believes in representative government. Well, what a novel idea. Dick Cates has vast experience in agricultural economic policy, both local and national. His economic development/job-creation background includes running the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School for Beginning Dairy and Livestock Farmers and serving on the board of the State Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection. His participation in civic endeavors has been broad and varied, including three uncontested terms on the local school board. He would champion local schools because "I believe they are the center of rural Wisconsin communities."
I often wonder where we find people who are willing to offer part of their lives to represent us - we the people out here. How incredibly fortunate we are to have a candidate of Mr. Cates' caliber. I urge voters to get further acquainted with him and others who will be on the ballot come November.
