To the editor:

Dick Cates is running for the 51st Assembly seat and we are extremely impressed with his commitment and integrity. You may have received a flier in your mailbox from the American Federation for Children attacking Dick Cates. The sole agenda of the AFC is to expand school vouchers to all private schools in Wisconsin. This means that your state tax dollars will be going toward supporting private schools of all persuasions and denominations, with no accountability for those dollars. Dick Cates opposes this expansion because he believes wholeheartedly in the public school system - the foundation upon which our nation and our democracy are built. Dick feels strongly that taxpayer dollars should be spent on local public education, enriching the opportunities for all children in our local districts and across the state. Dick's opponent, Todd Novak, regrettably, has been bought and paid for by the AFC. He will thus be obligated to vote for the expansion of vouchers, no matter what, because he has taken a large sum of money from that group. I don't know about you, but I think that is a poor way to conduct an election - with outside groups having heavy agendas paying the bills. This is not the way Dick Cates is running his campaign.

In addition, as an experienced farmer and a conservation award winner, Dick knows that the strength of a rural economy is in the hard work of its citizen farmers. He also knows that protecting the land and water is an important step in protecting our health, our economy and our future. As a successful farmer, and an educator who trains young farmers, Dick believes in the protection of rural values and family farms. This is the basis of our community culture and one of the strengths of our economy.

We support Dick because he is a man of integrity which is something woefully lacking in the misrepresentative dark money ads that are being circulated against him. We believe that the issues that Dick cares about - public education, a strong economy and a clean environment are of paramount importance in this election. Certainly, electing one person to the State Assembly won't solve all of our problems, but Dick's patriotism, courage, forthrightness and common sense would certainly bring an added measure of civility and vision to our state. Good people CAN make a difference - even in politics.
