From Mary Berger
Monroe
To the editor:
My name is Mary Berger and as I near the end of my first term on Monroe's school board, I am seeking your vote to continue this service for another term, along with incumbents Amy Bazley and Bob Erb. Our board is unified in our focus on students and their needs, even as we work through some challenging times. We've made great improvements to our academics and schools, showing achievement and growth over the past few years. I will continue to support strong programs that help our students learn and prepare for the future.
As a member of the Board of Education, I chair the Policy Committee and serve on the Curriculum Committee. I work together with my colleagues, administration and teachers to provide an excellent education and maintain fiscal responsibility. We also must be vigilant about creating an inclusive, engaging and safe atmosphere where all students can learn. We are challenged by unfunded mandates, reduced state aid, and a struggling economy. I keep the financial well-being and safety of our schools and taxpayers at the forefront of difficult decisions.
I serve on the Employee Relations Committee and prioritize being a district that attracts and retains great teachers and staff. They are vital to the success of our students. We encourage continued growth, and provide training opportunities and collaboration time to bolster student achievement. I started my career as a teacher and my sister is a teacher. I have great respect and admiration for the time, creativity and commitment necessary to do the job well.
I am very familiar with the variety of stakeholders in our community. My husband, Don, and I moved to Monroe in 1987. We started our family here and raised two children who are graduates of Monroe schools. Through my work at Monroe Clinic, I engage with people across all age, health and economic dimensions. I work to listen to and balance the needs of all constituents. We all share in the advantages of educating our children well.
Doing what is best for students is at the heart of all of our decisions as a board. I appreciate your support and ask for your vote for me, as well as Bob Erb and Amy Bazley so we can continue to work on behalf of our community.
