Letter to the editor: Balanced diet not complete without meat, dairy

Monroe

To the editor:

I am tired of reading articles in this paper about why I should be a vegetarian and not support our dairy and beef industry. If you want to be a vegetarian, that is your choice. Many others, including me, enjoy eating meat and I am frustrated with others who tell me how bad meat is for me. High blood pressure can be caused from problems you are going through in your life and is often hereditary. Cancer can happen to anyone if you eat meat or not. Everything can cause cancer from family history, the sun, radiation, exhaust fumes, etc. I love to eat many types of vegetables and fruits that I raise in my gardens. However, meat has always been the main portion of my meal twice a day along with a good amount of 2 percent milk. I also enjoy eating real ice cream made from dairy products.

I raise chickens for eggs and meat production. To me, it is a good idea to raise or buy your meat locally. Then you know where it has come from and how it was raised.

I am never going to embrace Meatless Monday or vegan meals. To say the most dangerous weapon is the fork is absurd. Our most dangerous problem comes from misinformation on T.V., magazines, and the Associated Press about agriculture. These articles in the newspaper blow my mind. Why would you live Monroe or the surrounding area if you do not want to support the local economy? Think of all the cheese factories we have in Green County. How about all of the ag businesses that are supported by the dairy and beef industry? Too many people are too out of touch with agriculture.

I do think it is a good idea to raise vegetables and fruits, but the dinner is not complete without meat. As for a New Year's resolution, I can think of much better choices than choosing to go vegan. How about turn your lights on when it is foggy and no talking on your cell phone while driving.
