Letter to the Editor: ATV question misleading

Monroe

To the editor:

We would like to address the misleading question on the Town of Jefferson's advisory referendum that will appear on the ballot on April 3, 2018: "Are you as a resident of the Town of Jefferson in favor of allowing a 4-wheel ATV trail on your town roads?" The route is not on all roads but just a few specific roads and it is a route, not a trail, and this question should have been asked properly!

First, under Wisconsin State Law there is no liability held against a municipality when a route is put into place, if there is proper ordinance and signage, then Wisconsin law defines this as a Route, not a TRAIL!

Next, we believe that Jefferson Township has about 60-plus miles of roads and we are only asking to make a road route on a 9-mile stretch of specific roads.

Our original proposed route into Juda, on a residential street, had some residents objecting to that route, so we listened and proposed a different route, so as not to travel on any residential streets. We want to work with all concerned, and you will see that you are not impacted in a negative way so please work with us by voting YES. We are only asking for a 6-month trial, and this will impact the local economy, businesses, and you the residents in a good way, due to the Wisconsin and county sales tax that tourism brings in. The one-year Cheese Country Trail survey showed that trail users spent $15 million with $13 million coming from out of the area and state. We surveyed everyday people and professional people who enjoy the small towns that they feel take them back in time, and many return in their vehicles to enjoy small-town events.

We are trying to connect the Cheese Country Trail in Monroe to Brodhead and businesses along the route and we are at the Clarno and Jefferson line to the west and Jefferson and Spring Grove line and on to Brodhead to the east.

ATV/UTV riders are not outlaws, just everyday people who pay taxes, support the schools, fire department, first responders, local businesses and respect law enforcement just like other Jefferson Township residents.

Please vote YES on the ATV route and maybe someday you will be enjoying the trail and routes, as many people who fought these routes, are now enjoying these routes with their ATV/UTV.
