To the editor:

The week of May 18 to 24 marks the 40th annual celebration of EMS Week, a week designated to recognizing the vital role EMS holds in communities across our nation. This year's theme is "Answering the call; giving our all."

EMS is on the front line, treating patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They care for patients of all ages, in their home, at work or on the road.

In 1974, when the first EMS week was celebrated, EMS in our region was in its infancy, with the concept of pre-hospital care of the sick and injured just taking root. Through the years, the concept of "scoop and run" has been replaced with well-planned, well-managed patient care that rivals pre-hospital care anywhere in the nation.

The dedicated men and women who comprise EMS in our region are true professionals. They spend countless hours in training and certification classes in preparation to provide expert care to patients at a moment's notice.

Monroe Clinic wishes to extend our thanks to all area EMS members for their dedication to caring for the sick and injured. As members of our community we can be confident that when we dial 911, those responding will be highly trained professionals who are truly giving their all.

When you see EMS personnel, please take time to thank them for what they do every day.
