John and Mary Frantz: Taxes should be shared by all, equally

It's tax season, and we invite readers to join us in celebrating Tax Pride Day on April 15. Tax Pride Day is when we residents of the U.S. appreciate what our taxes accomplish, and empower ourselves to take charge of where our tax money goes.

We believe taxes are needed for our common good, to pay for things we can do better together than alone. We are proud to pay taxes for such things as:

• The National Park System that lets us experience nature.

• The Centers for Disease Control to protect us from epidemics.

• Our schools.

We also believe:

• Taxes ought to be progressive, which means that:

• Wealthy people should pay a greater proportion of taxes than low-and middle-income people. Furthermore:

• Income from investments should not be taxed at a lower rate than income from work.

• Our country is built on the taxes all citizens have paid.

How will we celebrate Tax Pride Day? We will call our elected representatives and let them know our thoughts on who should pay taxes and how tax dollars should be spent.

Let's be proud that working together all of us can fund a mighty nation.
