Humane society report questioned

I had heard rumblings that a dog named Bruiser had been euthanized by the Green County Humane Society in September, and there were no health reasons involved. This was an amorous, rambunctious, young boy that needed a strong personality to keep him in line. Because of lack of training, compassion, or ability of the employees, this did not happen, and instead of seeking help, the GCHS Board decided it was easier to euthanize him.

I was the Chair of the Euthanasia Committee of the Green County Humane Society for three years. In this time we were forced euthanized many cats (mostly ones that were dying of FeLV) and a few dogs because of medical conditions that would prevent any quality or quantity of life without suffering, which is the definition of no-kill. As Chair of Euthanasia, each month at the board meetings, I would give a report of the animals, with the assistance of the shelter director. When the executive director was hired, she included all of this information in her report, so when it was my turn to give the Euthanasia report, I referred to the executive director's report. I attended the monthly board meeting Oct. 13, to hear the Euthanasia report first hand. To my dismay, the chair was not present, so the Euthanasia report was not given. A member of the public in the audience questioned the president about skipping the report and he stated the chair was not present. The executive director was present, and there was no mention of Euthanasia in her "animal numbers report." I came home and looked on the GCHS website, and the last month of minutes on the website are for July and it states under the Euthanasia report to see the executive director's report. The director's report states that she gave theanimal numbers.

Why can't the actual animal numbers report be scanned and placed online, as well, for all their members to see? This obviously has been going on for months, without anybody realizing that information is being withheld. I contacted the vice president three times this past week, with no response, so I felt that I had no recourse but to raise public awareness to this issue.

If the GCHS does not want to continue to be a true no-kill, then don't. But please stop deceiving those of us that specifically support organizations that are honestly no-kill.
