From Thurston Hanson
Monroe
To the editor,
My name is Thurston Hanson. I am seeking the voter's support for my re-election as Ward 7 alderman. I am 43 years old, married to my wonderful wife Elizabeth, and we have three children, Samuel, 11; Henry, 9; and Sabrina, 7. I was born in Monroe at St. Clare Hospital and grew up in the area. I am a proud member of this community. I am running again because my fiscal conservatism best represents the interests of the residents of this ward.
As I knock on doors and talk to citizens, my beliefs are confirmed. Almost all the residents want their taxes lowered by bringing city spending under control. I do too. Most people talk about pocketbook issues. They want to keep their hard-earned money, rather than have the city tax more than it spends just to grow its rainy day cash balance in the bank. Yes, the city of Monroe taxes too much, and spends too much. Our city has plenty of cash in the bank from years of over taxing the citizens. This needs to end.
Now is not the time for inexperience in Ward 7. I am a proven fiscal conservative, and treat the taxpayer's wallet just like it was my own. I prove this by voting against items like the recent 18-percent sewer rate hike, and the mayor's idea last year to have city of Monroe taxpayers guarantee a home loan for a city employee.
The budget process at city hall is broken, and needs fixing. Almost everyone on council is unhappy with the current process. Taxes can be lowered. Folks, it is possible. The 2012 budget, which takes in way more tax dollars than what is actually needed, barely passed on a 6-4 vote. It is worth noting that some alders actually voted to raise taxes for 2012. A smaller, sensible budget for 2013 is just around the corner.
Ward 7 voters also tell me they want business growth, new businesses, and better paying jobs. I agree, and have been pro-business during my entire length of public service, and will continue that quest. The best way to reach these goals is through lower taxes and having an elected official who is a bulldog on controlling spending and taxation. I am that elected official. I ask for your support and vote on Tuesday, April 3.
