Green County EMS Board: A chance to make a difference

May 18-24 marks "National EMS Week," a week of celebration, recognition and appreciation. Green County EMS, Inc. (GCEMS) in Monroe would like to take this week to honor our EMS members and recognize their professionalism, commitment, sacrifice and round-the-clock dedication to our community. We also take this time to appreciate our colleagues and partners who are part of the EMS chain. From the dispatchers and law enforcement personnel who answer and respond to the 911 calls, the first and first responder departments that provide initial scene safety and medical care, to the staff, physicians and nurses at the hospital emergency room, we salute you. You all are a vital link in the continuum of care for patients in our community.

GCEMS will be celebrating EMS Week with several planned events throughout the week. On Wednesday, May 21, GCEMS has invited area high school junior and senior students to a presentation at 7 p.m. Students will find out how they can attend a Saturday EMT class, starting in August, at BTC Monroe campus, and have the four-credit class paid for in exchange for a one-year membership commitment.

Also, keep your eyes open for GCEMS members who will be out and about in the community taking blood pressures, delivering pizzas and handing out invitations to our open house June 4. This invitation could be your chance to win a 42-inch high-definition TV! When you order a pizza this week, you could see an ambulance pull up to your front door to not only deliver your fresh, hot pizza, but to personally hand you an invitation which just might be the winning entry. We will be escorting pizza deliveries from Bullet's from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 22; Pizza Hut from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 23; Vince's from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 24; and Suisse Haus from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 28. We'll also be at the Green County Dairy Breakfast on May 31. Take a minute to stop by to get your blood pressure taken and pick up your invitation.

Bring your invitation, or pick one up at the door, and join us at our open house on June 4 at 1821 12th St. in Monroe (next to the police station). Attend one of the three scheduled presentations at 5, 6 or 7 p.m. You could walk away with not only a fantastic prize of a 42-inch TV, but with a new-found sense of pride and an opportunity to volunteer to help your community.

Maybe you don't think being an EMT is right for you. That's OK. As a volunteer organization, we have other non-medical opportunities available. Do you have a good driving record? Ever considered being an emergency vehicle operator? Do you like fund-raising or have a talent for public relations? We are a non-fire-based ambulance service with a private, nonprofit status and receive no local government funding. We are funded solely through grants, fund-raisers, donations and service fees. If you enjoy grant writing or fund-raising or have great ideas for public outreach or recruiting, give us a call. We have a special category of membership available for auxiliary members and we would welcome your ideas and expertise.

Our members wear many hats and come from all walks of life. Our organization is devoted to helping others, and we need caring and compassionate team members to further our mission of service. If you've been thinking about becoming involved in our community, here's your chance. Call us or visit our Web site. Or better yet, order a pizza and have your blood pressure taken at one of the business locations or at the Dairy Breakfast, and then come and join us on June 4 and find how you can become one of us.

Help us, help you, help others. Volunteer, and make a difference!
