Sometimes children can teach adults so much.
On March 26 and 27, the Black Hawk and Monroe girls basketball teams competed at the WIAA state tournament. Monroe lost in the semifinal game, 31-30, to Winneconne, and Black Hawk advanced to the final before losing to Wausau Newman, 64-30.
Black Hawk did, however, capture the school's first state tournament basketball trophy of any kind.
For Monroe, it was the school's third consecutive trip to the tournament; Black Hawk made its second straight trip to state - both successes by most measures.
Each schools' achievements on the court could only be overshadowed by what we have heard about the schools off the court.
Our reporters and staff have been told the kids on each team, who represent all high school ages, acted respectfully to opposing players and fans. Good sportsmanship is one of the most critical reasons schools have and should continue to provide sports opportunities to students even as budgets continue to tighten.
The lesson for adults here is a simple, but important one: act in a manner that is respectful - no matter what life throws your way.
The athletes from Black Hawk and Monroe were virtual inches from reaching a goal they have been striving for, even in the off-season, for years, but they didn't show anger - they shook the other teams' hands and moved on.
