W-2/Economic Support Supervisor, Green County Human Services

We are all in the midst of the holiday season, a time for giving thanks for the many blessings we have and also to remember those that need our assistance.

Many families in Green County are struggling financially. Green County continues to see more families seeking public assistance than in previous years. In October 2010, Green County had 3,698 individuals receiving FoodShare benefits; in October 2011, the number is 3,955. Green County's Medical Assistance numbers also continue to grow, from 5,966 individuals in October 2010 to 6,065 in October 2011.

However, the increased number of homeless and near-homeless families seen by Human Services is the most troubling. In 2010, Human Services saw 175 families that were either homeless or near-homeless. The number of families in 2011 facing homelessness will exceed the 2010 number.

The United Way is vital to Green County's families; by lending your generous financial support, you are improving the lives of those less fortunate in our county. Funds from the United Way support proper daycare, dental services, camps, after-school programming for our children; nutritious meals to our senior citizens; homelessness prevention programs; domestic violence prevention education for our youth; and much, much more.

One of the reasons Green County is a special place to live is its support of those in need. United, we can make a difference - please give generously to the United Way as they work to provide help for people in our community.
