We are genuinely confused by some of the comments made at the April 9 annual meeting.
On Dec. 15, 2004 a committee was formed called the "Citizens of Wayne Township for Better Government." Several members of that group were present at last week's annual meeting, most of whom have rarely attended meetings since then.
The "Citizens of Wayne Township for Better Government" originally made a point of questioning every penny spent, and this committee made an advisory motion to limit the dollar amount the board could spend without coming back to the town members. This is the same "committee" that insisted we had to save money by laying off employees. Now some of these same members are saying "spend whatever you want" no matter the cost (as long as it is their road or particular interest being served). Yet they claim to want to reunify the township!
This township does not have the resources to operate in this way. This is a three-member board - that means all three board members are involved in the decisions. Otherwise, why pay the salaries for three members? Furthermore, town members need to be kept informed as issues arise, not after the fact. It only takes a few minutes to make two phone calls to arrange a special meeting for the board.
Lastly, I believe Steve Lee should be applauded for trying to contain costs - not be accused of acting out of a "desire for power," as expressed by some town members at the April 9 meeting.
