Perhaps some of you are getting the same mail as I am, mail from a group called All Children Matter in Grand Rapids, Mich. All Children Matter is actually a Virginia PAC funded in part by Wal-Mart heirs John and Jim Walton, as well as the DeVos family of Michigan. And guess what? Brett Davis' campaign has taken thousands of dollars in funding from these two families.
On the front page of one of the many campaign fliers circulating around the area, it says that John Waelti's health care proposal would give illegal aliens free health care. Like so many of these special interest group smear ads, there is no truth to this claim and it only serves to distract voters from the real issues.
The truth is John Waelti is in favor of affordable health care for all of Wisconsin's citizens. He knows that in order to increase access to care, we can't expect local community hospitals to donate more and more charitable service. Illegal aliens aside, health care for the uninsured still is a significant issue. In 2007 the Monroe Clinic provided high-quality care to the uninsured in the amount of $7.5 million. That was 39 percent of the Clinic's net income for 2007. Is this the plan? Make the Monroe Clinic provide care for the uninsured? And how long do we think they can continue doing that?
Brett Davis has now jumped on the boat with the special interests, and put out his own piece claiming that Waelti would give "Full benefits for illegal aliens." He claims not to know who puts out the ads but he takes money from the Walton family in his campaigns, including this one. Maybe he does not "know" them but he knows them well enough to get significant campaign donations.
And, by the way, one of the fliers noted that Swiss cheese "stinks." Brett, you might remind your friends that Swiss cheese is a healthy food product. And it doesn't stink. Which is more than I can say about these ads.
It is time for a change here in the 80th Assembly district. Please join me in voting for John Waelti on Nov. 4, and put these partisan political games to rest.
