Mineral Point

Transfixed. That described my 9-year-old self as our class toured the Henry Ford Museum near Detroit.

Our fourth-grade field trip included viewing the original velvet rocking chair where Abraham Lincoln was mortally wounded. A rust-colored blot on the rocker's back - the bloodstain - stayed with me, infusing a life-long passion for American history.

That was then. Now I am still transfixed by history, particularly in Lafayette County where I've met people whose forbears date back to Revolutionary times and the Civil War conflict.

The local historical society is preparing to observe the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with a program that ought to interest everyone. Letters from a Lafayette County soldier to his sister in Wiota will be dramatized by Darlington High School students at its May 7 program, "Voices of the Civil War."

Attend. Be transfixed.
