Budget balanced, but at what cost?

"Smoke and mirrors." That's how previous Wisconsin lawmakers were criticized for "papering over" budget deficits. Now, Gov. Walker and the Republican-controlled legislature are boasting of having balanced the state budget the "right way." But at what cost?

Education and other vital public services crippled, thousands of public employees laid off, bargaining rights eliminated, state and local economies pushed deeper into recession. These are real costs, not paper costs.

Let's put aside this balanced budget mania and devastating budget cuts, at least until the economy recovers. With recovery will come increased tax revenue and reduced social program outlays - the sensible way to eliminate budget deficits.
