Blossoms & Barbs: Sept. 5, 2009

I'd like to give The Monroe Times a huge bouquet of blossoms >concerning the "Our View" column of Aug. 28 entitled, "Bill not tough enough on payday loans." A quote: Wisconsin is the only state in the nation that doesn't cap interest rates on the loans. We'd still have a usuary law that would cap rates at 36 percent per year, which would be better than allowing payday loans to average 542 percent per year. I would hope any legislator in the state of Wisconsin would support this view. Otherwise, I would question just why are they running office? - La Vern F. Isely, Monroe>

A heartfelt blossom to Yvonne Schutte and her husband >for taking care of 10 puppies from the Green County Humane Society. I cannot imagine the time that must take. I have two dogs, and they are a lot of work. I would hate to think what would have happened to those puppies if they had been at the pound when the kennel cough broke out. If only everyone had that kind of compassion and dedication to the homeless animals, the world would be a much better place. - Jason, GCHS member>

A huge blossom to Peggy Miller, EVERYONENEEDSAHOME INC., South Wayne, two officers from the Monroe Police Department and Tonya Kelly of the Green Country Humane Society >for rescuing an injured Great Horned Owl on Thursday morning. The rescued owl, which is on the Protected Bird List, was reported along the side of road on the Wisconsin 11 West bypass just before the last Monroe exit off-ramp by Doris McVicar traveling to The Swiss Colony for work. This was a total team effort, as Tonya kept the bird calm and Peggy handled the owl, while the officers kept traffic away as to not frighten the owl. Peggy then took the owl to the Emergency Clinic for Animals in Madison, where the owl was treated for injuries. Peggy has rescued numerous animals and has previously rescued other owls. We are thankful that this beautiful owl was rescued and for everyone's help in getting it to the Madison clinic ASAP. - The Swiss Colony SC West Internet Department>
