A barb to the recent lack of good sportsman-like conduct among area high school football players. It is really sad to see our young people act in such a terrible manner: Not shaking hands with the opposing team at the end of the game. Trash talking out on the field. Seeing a player blindside an opponent after a play. And if causing injury isn't bad enough, but then to see them "flex" and taunt the injured player on the ground afterwards not only angers me, but breaks my heart. What are we teaching our young people - win at no cost, or if you can't win, hurt someone anyways? Who do we blame - the kids, the parents, the coaches, the professional players who do this behavior and get fined for it? Perhaps all of the above. In any event, we need to teach these players to win with humility and lose with dignity - a lesson that they will need as adults. - Anonymous
A huge blossom to Green County Health Department Director RoAnn Warden for maintaining the confidential medical records of the nine people's medical records during the recent E. coli outbreak in the New Glarus area. Warden had to balance the need for the public's need to know and a person's right to keep her/his record private and confidential. Since you read it in the Capital Times Website and saw it on Channel 3, you were informed. Warden has no control over what The Capital Times or Channel 3 reports or how they got the information. I am not sure, but I do not think that the Monroe paper is the official paper of Green County. The citizens of Monroe were never in danger. I am sure they wanted the "juicy details" but their need to know was slight. - Anonymous
A big barb to Brodhead City Council. Dirty politics as usual. The council did not renew the fire chief's contract, yet he is still there, involved, being paid for vacation pay, and who knows what else. The council's lack of action has resulted in ruining the morale of the fire department and the respect of the people. - A tired taxpayer
A blossom to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for charges against 91 defendants, including doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals, for their alleged participation in Medicare fraud for $295 million in false billing. For more info, go to hhs.gov and click on news. - Phil Fransen
I would like to send a belated bouquet of blossoms to the following people: the four men who helped me on Aug. 18 when I fell. They made sure I was OK, helped me up and took me home; to my daughter Shelly, who took me to the ER and stayed there with me and also at home; and to the ER department for all their help during my stay. - Carolyn Hyland
As a Monroe city taxpayer, I would like to give a sharp barb to the city and the council members. Us union workers and other city employees took a freeze in our pay checks to help the city out. Now the above mentioned came up with a raise for Mr. Thompson, plus $10,000 if he gets all his license. He doesn't even live in the city so he doesn't spend his money in the town that rewards him very well. - A Monroe taxpayer
Colony Brands would like to pin a huge red, white, and blue blossom on the Pancho & Lefty's team - Russ and Nadine Brown, and Sally and Darren - and salute them for going above and beyond the call of duty. The Swiss Colony is proud to honor four military families in Florida on the "Designing Spaces" TV show this fall season. The Pancho & Lefty's team flew down to Florida on very short notice and prepared an unforgettable feast as a tribute to the patriotic service of all four families. From Chateaubriand and King Crab Legs to casseroles, stuffings, fruit and vegetable platters, exquisite dips and so much more, their food and their enthusiastic support demonstrated to these four families how grateful our country is for their sacrifices. We couldn't have asked for a more professional, more spectacular and inspiring tribute than that delivered by the Pancho & Lefty's team. And with the opening soon of their newest restaurant, The Deluxe Lounge, we loudly and proudly call for everyone to come support and honor these outstanding culinary artists who we're lucky to have right here in Monroe. - Colony Brands
