Blossoms & Barbs: Oct. 24, 2009

Just a tiny little barb to the Times.> Even with limited staff, one would think you could find some time to send a reporter or photographer to cover a hugely successful program - Monroe's freshman and JV football teams. So, you never have? Really not a good reason. So, then others would expect it. Still not a very good reason. Maybe pick one sport per week to feature the younger guys' and gals' programs. After all, they work just as hard as varsity. Besides, think of the extra number of papers you may sell and the positive PR. How about checking to see if there is a wanna-be sportswriter at the high school who would love the byline and $10 or $20. Or, find out who are those parents roaming the sideline with cameras and ask for a pic or two. Bet you'd find someone in both categories and create a lot of goodwill for the paper instead of people sitting in the stands grumbling about lack of coverage. Just a thought. ... - Mom>

A barb to the legislature and Obama >for the health care bill they are creating. What we need are legitimate and sustainable reductions in the cost of health care. According to most credible experts, what most of us are going to get is an increase in our premiums AND an increase in our taxes, a double whammy! I desperately wish I could take back my vote for Obama. I am sure he means well, but he is not doing a good job. - Concerned>

I would like to give a blossom to the Boy Scouts and Leaders of Troops 115, 180 and 101 >for helping with the yard waste drop-off at the Street Department this year. We collected approximately 78,000 pounds of yard waste. Their time and effort was greatly appreciated all. Thanks again, guys! - Thomas J. Boll, Street Supervisor, City of Monroe>

A huge dump truck load full of barbs to the "punks" >who thought it was "cool" to assault my 56-year-old mother while out for a walk on Wednesday night. Here is a woman who was out enjoying the beautiful weather Wednesday night by going for a walk, when two "punks" came up from behind her, beat her to the ground, cut her head open, cracked bones in her wrist and jaw, broke her glasses and injured her knee. All of this while walking on a heavily traveled, well lit street in the city of Monroe. It is sad and appalling that we, as residents of Monroe cannot even enjoy a nice walk outside anymore without being in fear of being attacked. I caution all residents of Monroe not to walk by yourself, be alert and unfortunately live in fear, as this is what this incident has caused both me personally, as well as my friends to now do. Second, if anyone hears anyone "bragging" of this incident, be sure to contact the Monroe Police Department, as no resident of Monroe should have to live in fear. - Concerned for the Citizens of Monroe>

A blossom to the area individuals> who already have agreed to provide warm, safe homes for some of the 51 cats recently rescued in Monroe. The Green County Humane Society still is looking for homes for about half of these cats - most are feral and will be best suited to living in a barn or other appropriate structure. There is no fee to adopt these cats. Thank you in advance for any contributions that will help defray the cost under these special circumstances. Any help with the extra cost of caring for these animals is greatly appreciated by GCHS to help continue our mission of finding loving, forever homes for the animals in our care. - GCHS Board of Directors >

I would like to send out a blossom to the Monroe Middle school staff, and a couple of Monroe Middle School students. >First to the staff for taking swift and harsh action against the "punks" who like to gang up on smaller kids and beat them up. I would also like to blossom a couple kids >for coming to the rescue of their friends. I wont name names, but you know who you are. And finally a blossom to the parents >that raised these kids who stepped in for teaching their children the value of friendship and for knowing right from wrong. For those of you that are doing all these bad things ... it doesn't make you cool, it makes you a loser and a coward. - Jeff Ditzenberger, Monticello>
