I would like to give a blossom to The Monroe Theater Guild on the celebration program for their 40th Anniversary, held at The Stage building on Sat. Oct. 9, 2010. The program included a "retiring of the mortgage" presentation, along with guest speakers/performers from past, present and future. Also featured were video memories of past productions as well as some very entertaining live musical performances featuring music from past shows. Thanks to all involved for their work in keeping the performing arts alive and well in the Monroe area. - Mary Jo Finkenbinder
A huge barb to all the thieves, ruffians, thugs, hoodlums, who have invaded us. We take pride in making the neighborhood proud by decorating outside. When will this stop? Local police can't you help us? They not only take or destroy and leave evidence or they take very costly items which have so much sentimental value to owners. If you can sleep at night then your conscience is dead. Please return the items or pay for damages so you won't be forever haunted. Each morning I hope and look to see if valuable items have been returned, as they are useless without what you failed to take. Please parents if you find items please give to police they will find the owners, as reported. - Disgusted
A stunning bouquet of blossoms to the "dynamite" Parkside School homecoming float. My children and I absolutely loved to see so many of their teachers having fun and supporting Monroe's homecoming. Your choreographed dance routine was fantastic and your energy was amazing - we even stuck around to see you on the parade route's return loop. You truly had everyone in the streets dancing along with you. Thanks for making it a fabulous parade - Parkside Parent
A barb to Mayor Ross for his lack of professionalism and knowingly allowing the disregard of an ordinance. - Taxpayer
A sharp barb to the oil companies. Gas prices rising faster than you can fill your tank. Curious why when one of their own (BP) was spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico, gas prices stayed lower and even decreased the whole time they were attempting to fix the leak, but now that the hole is plugged, and they are out of the spotlight, oil/gas prices are shooting up. Someone explain to me why when we had hurricanes threatening oil rigs, a pipe leak, or a fire at a refinery the prices increased substantially but when the oil industry was loosing millions of gallons a day prices never rose. But now after the spotlight is off we are subjected to the increase. - Petrol Pete
A barb to the Green County Humane Society. Three times I called about a puppy wandering at Twining Valley. Three times, you told me "catch it" and then we can do something. I say to you do your job. That's what your getting paid for. - Senior at Twining Valley
A very big barb to the Mayor and some of our elected officials. You must of forgotten the election in the spring of this year. The voters made a statement that we wanted fiscal responsibility and most important a change to "politics as usual." By the actions of Mayor Ross this past week, it was made very apparent that nothing has changed. In the spring, the citizens of Monroe elected Mike Rivers and Mike Boyce to the city council. New ideas and change coming to the council had everyone in the city excited. But it took only a couple of months before the unwillingness of change and the continuation of "politics as usual" by the majority, that a discouraged Mr. Rivers resigned. The idea that things can continue as usual are over. The citizens desire to have individuals on the council that will lookout for ways to be financially conservative. That is why we went to the polls. Most every household has had to make cuts and adjustments their budget. The city should be no exception. Businesses have had to get leaner to survive and the government should be no different. In the spring there will be another election and the other half of the council will be up for election. Those individuals should pay attention to the current state and federal elections that are going on. Across the nation, citizens are telling their elected officials that we are not going to take the same old same old. The direction on the council can not continue. Take this as a wake up call. -Still Waiting For Change
A blossom to all the rural dwellers and land owners who keep their own roadside mowed and picked up all summer. It adds to the visibility factor, which promotes highway safety. And it looks good.
A barb to those responsible for allowing distribution of incomes in the United States to become the most lop-sided since Census records began. Twenty percent of our population now receives 49 percent of all income in this country.
A belated blossom to farmers along Highway 81 west of Darlington, and others, who left rows of cornstalks standing parallel to the roadway to serve as "natural snow fences" last winter.
A barb to all those using foreign, and out-of-state funding of nearly anonymous ad campaigns to sway voters. Now we see how the Citizens United Supreme Court decision threatens to hand control of our country entirely to faceless lobbyists and big corporations, via half-truths and misformations.
A blossom to all those wanting clean, financially responsible government. We get why "Tea Partiers" are unhappy. There used to be a group fighting for these good government values - they were called "Progressives", and they started right here in Wisconsin.
A blossom to those who understand this practicality: Getting to the good things in life - like growing crops or a garden; child-rearing, or learning another language - does not happen instantly, despite what television depicts. We had eight-plus years of damage to the financial system through unmitigated greed, repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, letting corporations move jobs overseas and rewarding them for it; and Congress not playing attention to vital economic issues but merely rubber-stamping what lobbyists wrote for them. Despite partisan foot-dragging, as an applied economist, I recognize that the Bush stimulus and Obama's enacted measures will get this country back on track. Or at least as much as could get passed in the Congress. It's not "instant," given eight-plus years of "over-feed the rich and corporate" economic policy in our country. - M.E McKnight
Monroe City Council members considering building a senior center at the site of the downtown parking deck, what were you thinking? Where do you think the renters, who live in the upstairs apartments around the square or businesses are going to park? Do you think seniors will actually like seeing all the dumpsters when looking up and down the alley? We are already taxed enough and then we have to pay TIF taxes. We cannot afford to support the senior complex. Do you think seniors who are blessed with more assets will come here because the rent is more reasonable than Madison? The city has so much more to offer than we do. A wonderful place for the seniors complex is the Stuessy Funeral Home. We begin to wonder, are you Monroe people? Do you shop and dine here or alternatively, go out of town? Monroe needs to move forward, then always taking two steps back.- Anonymous
