Blossoms & Barbs: Nov. 27, 2010

A barb to the schools and uncaring parents. Where is our world going to? I'm fed up with the way things are today. My child cannot spell - when I questioned the teacher four years ago, I got the response "they don't need to, they have spell check." When I asked for a tutor to help last year, I got the response "we can't give out other students grades." I did not ask for grades, I asked for help. Where is our schools going and the children? Children do as they are taught. I found a watch that did not belong to my child. I questioned them and they said they found it at school - it was immediately returned the next day. It may not have been expensive but may have sentimental value and you did not pay for it, I told them. We have had to purchase several bikes and other items that were stolen never to be returned. Now one of my children had an Ipod touch stolen from a boys locker room at the high school on Monday, Nov. 22 between 5:15 and 7:30 p.m. nothing can be done again. We are a hard-working family that pays our own way even through the tough times. If you notice your child with something new ask! It is what parenting is about, and if they say they bought it from someone, follow up. I guarantee they did not purchase a $300 iPod from Sam for $20. My child has been using the honor system with his buddies. He is now out his cash because his friends promised to pay later for items he purchased for them. Please teach your children to be honest, responsible and follow through on promises. It will make us a stronger community and country. Stand up and ask where have you been and what are you doing it is your responsibility. Theft and dishonesty will only lead to a tougher future. - A disappointed, hardwoking parent

A blossom to Swiss Colony and the many employees who donated food and other items to send to our troops overseas. Several employees gave up these Saturday morning to sort and pack 140 boxes. I am sure it will all be greatly appreciated. - Anonymous
