Blossoms & Barbs: Nov. 14, 2008

A barb to each and every person> that displayed large, crude anti-McCain/Palin signs just blocks away from the polling places on election day. This type of ugly campaigning was seen in pictures and videos across the United States for the past few weeks, and I expected to also see it in Monroe. Barack Obama himself agreed with this type of behavior and he made that clear by not denouncing such behavior. - Greg>

A huge barb, and invitation to live in a different country, >to any and all who since the election have ridiculed, harassed and, yes, even threatened people who voted for someone other than their preferred candidate. In some cases, laws have been violated. This is NOT what America stands for; this is certainly not the behavior of anyone who has read or more importantly understands what the Constitution is all about. And, ironically, it is NOT behavior that either John McCain or President-elect Obama would endorse. Truly, those doing this trample on and dishonor those who literally gave the "last full measure" to ensure this most fundamental of rights. - Wondering>

I would like to second the blossom to Carol Wyss and all the wonderful people who work at the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department. >I have two children that have participated in many programs and these people are the most patient and understanding people I have come across. It can't be easy to have all these small children to do projects with and play games with. They all do a wonderful job. - Happy Parent>

I agree, Greg, a barb to everyone that displayed >large crude anti-(place your candidate here) signs. I myself, did not see any anti-McCain-Palin signs on Election Day, therefore I did not comment on them. The signs I had mentioned in my previous barb were about 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide, spray painted with the words "A vote for Obama is a vote for Osama." These were signs that were visible after stepping just outside the Park and Rec, otherwise I probably would not have seen them. Also, a barb to each and every person >who either simply does not have the courage, or does not truly believe in their convictions enough to sign their full name after submitting a barb. - Niamh O'Neill Culhane>

A blossom to Monroe Schools> for revising the English program. It will open up a huge door of intellectual opportunity for many students. I am particularly excited about the AP offering! It will be extremely beneficial to students in the high school, encouraging and nurturing study at the college level. I commend the district for making this important investment into the English program, and hope that progressive improvements continue in all areas of curriculum. - Flannery Steffens>

A huge blossom to the Juda Boosters Club, >who tirelessly, year after year, do so much for the students at Juda Public Schools. Activities are planned and memories are made for all the students, not just those that are involved in sports. All the seniors were recently given a beautiful crystal mug with their name, graduation date and school emblem etched on it, all paid for by the fund-raising efforts of the Juda Booster Club. As a teacher at Juda School, I appreciate the wonderful atmosphere that they help to create at our school. - Joanne Putnam>

A huge blossom to the cast and everyone >that had anything to do with "The Monroe Golden Files!" and to everyone who has supported them by going to the show. It is good to hear people laugh. Nowadays, we need to hear more of it. - Marlene Bergemann>

A blossom to all of our veterans, >current and past and those that are gone, for defending America against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and for being willing to make the many sacrifices that they do. But, I challenge you to make every day Veterans Day and remember our troops still defending this great nation and pray for their safety and their safe return home from wherever they are as we quickly approach the holiday season.

A blossom to the Brodhead Lady Cardinals volleyball team >for giving Green County and their community an exciting season. And a blossom to all the parents and fans who followed them on their journey. Good job, everyone!

A blossom to all the many volunteers >at the Humane Society for their continued efforts in taking care of the many dogs and cats put into their care. And a blossom to those people >who adopt them.

And as we start coming into this colder season and into the holidays, a blossom to all the food pantries, grocery stores, and churches >who have drop-off points to help out our less fortunate. I know times are tough, but a box of cereal, canned good or a coat you have outgrown goes a long ways.

A barb to myself >and an apology to Cory and Ryan DAHMEN for not spelling their last name correctly. Why couldn't you guys have an easy name like Ditzenberger? Sorry guys.- Jeff Ditzenberger, Monticello>
