Blossoms & Barbs: May 19, 2012

I would like to thank those taxicab drivers who stop and help our senior citizens in and out of their taxis as they ride to their appointments. Also a huge blossom to the young man who gave up his front seat to let my 91-year-old mother sit there. He even held her cane for her as she got in. Oh how I wish there were more young people in the world like him! - Kathy Rinehardt

A big home run blossom to all those coaching our young ones this year for softball and baseball. Your time and patience is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking time to teach our young ones about sportsmanship and the value of physical activity. - Baseball Lover's Mom

I would like to give a blossom to President Obama's administration for finding more Medicare fraud this month. This time in one of the largest one-day crackdowns, they are charging more than 100 people for trying to defraud the Medicare healthcare program for $452 million. This is another benefit of the Affordable Care Act commonly known as Obama Care. - Phil Fransen

A barb: I am concerned that the Monroe Public Library is closed every Friday morning. A library is a big part of a community. As the retiring Madison librarian stated, "Cutting hours is not what any library should be doing." Computers and other resources are in great demand and should be accessible to everyone. If you're concerned the library is closed Friday mornings, please let the head librarian know. She stated she hadn't gotten many complaints. - Margit Asmus

A barb to Mitt Romney. He says we have too many regulations. Ever since they got rid of the Glass-Steagall Act, we've had problems. Missing money, starting with Enron, Madoff, MF Global and now J.P. Morgan. This will be the issue that decides the election this fall. Firing a few people at J.P.M., the leading derivative dealer, isn't going to get the job done. We need federal regulations and an investigation. - La Vern F. Isely

Blossoms to everyone who helped make the 20th Annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive an unbelievable success. We collected more than 8,380 pounds of food and $136, which can buy an additional 800 pounds of essentials. This is a record-smashing total and will keep the food pantry stocked through the summer, when the school programs are not in effect to help low-income children and their families. Thanks to all who helped and donated. - Yvonne Schutte, National Association of Letter Carriers
