Blossoms & Barbs: July 23, 2011

A long overdue blossom to the Greenwood Cemetery Association/caretakers. I frequent the cemetery almost daily between May and September caring for the flowers on gravesites of family members and have done so since 1985. I am always amazed at how beautifully the grounds are kept. Simply going to the cemetery having lost family and friends is difficult enough but it is made so much easier going to a place that is so well manicured. On days when the sky is blue and the sun shines through the trees, I have found myself standing still, in absolute awe, of the beauty of Greenwood. Occasionally, I have the opportunity to be there when the mowers and trimmers are on the move and I'm reminded of the thankless job these men have. I know it's something that I myself take for granted and I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for the long hours spent on making this memorial site so beautiful. - Jo Hawthorn

A huge blossom to Argyle's Fish fry and the people who organize and volunteer at this. I hadn't been there in a few years and was so pleased with everything. The cheese tent was colorfully decorated in red, white and blue and the cheese samples were displayed nicely and everything was kept so clean. I heard someone by the name of Emma gets the "honor" of cutting up the limburger. I think she deserves a big blossom/thank you in itself. The servers were all friendly and I got through the line quickly and was seated by again, very friendly staff. Food was excellent. Mother Nature deserves a thank you as well for giving them a beautiful day. Can't wait to attend next year! - Anonymous

I want to send a huge basket of blossoms to everyone who purchased pizzas at Papa Murphy's on Wednesday to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. We will be walking in Freeport and Madison in September and October for the 2011 out of the darkness community walks in remembrance of Cody Larsen. Join our team or make donations to "Team Som" at Outofthedarkness.org. - Anonymous

A huge barb to those who have come up with the redistricting plan with no input from the people it will affect. They should all be voted out of office for this dirty trick. Green County should not be split and certainly not into three parts - why would we stand for this blatant abuse by people that do not know us or care about what is best for us? - Anonymous

Blossoms to the Monroe Theatre Guild. "Noises Off" was my first MTG show, but it won't be my last. The venue is gorgeous - wonderfully intimate, yet as comfortable as your living room. The performance left me in awe. "Noises Off" is a very demanding play for actors, and the whole cast did an amazing job. We're very lucky to have a theater group of this caliber in Monroe. Thanks, everyone! - Suzann Holland

I would like to give a big barb to myself (Gene Mason) for "not remembering" the following in the Remember When article of June 10, 2011. 1. Ken Behring in the list of athletes of the 1940s. Ken was a very fine fullback and co-captain of the football team. 2. Harvey and Eddie Loeffel of The Monroe Cardinal baseball team managed by John "Cookie" Walters and led by the pitching of LaVerne "Lefty" Andrews. Many of Monroe's sports fans of that era consider Andrews to be the best baseball pitcher this area ever produced. 3. The Monroe Cardinal baseball team. Bill Moon, LaVerne Andrews, Bill Purcell, Ernie Vogler, Harvey Loeffel, Dick Wainwright, Jerry Dywer, Gene Mason, Leo Butts, Ken Norder, Fred Huber, Al Stauffacher, Jim Jordan and Curt Scherin. - Gene Mason

A big blossom to Jeremy Pink for a column so very well written. It appeared in the Wednesday, July 13 edition of The Monroe Times. I look forward to reading your next column, Jeremy. - A Times subscriber

A huge barb to the driver of the white late model Bonneville who was texting while driving (earlier this week) heading south on Clarno Road. I'm glad you looked up in time to notice you were on my side of the road and jerked your car back in your lane. My kids are thankful to still have there mom and you will surely wreck/kill someone, if you continue. - Anonymous

A barb to the Monroe Times for breaking the cardinal rule of journalism ... getting names correct. In journalism school I learned that first and foremost - if you got nothing else right - you check and double check names because people take great pride in seeing their name listed appropriately. Your article this week referenced the Optimists working with the owner of Faith Engineering ... whom you claim is John Faith. I believe you owe Jim Faith an apology. After you've done that, go back to the basics and start to take some pride in the articles that you publish - ensuring that the facts and names are correct, please. - Anonymous
