A blossom should go to the 1-South staff of Pleasant View Nursing Home and the Monroe Clinic Hospice. The staff at Pleasant View took extraordinary care of our father, Calvin Schmahl, and showed great kindness to us. Dr. Richardson and the Monroe Clinic Hospice staff were most understanding of father's needs and wishes during his last days. We are most appreciative that a facility such as Pleasant View is available for the residents of Green County. Thank you to all of you. - Diane (Schmahl) Del Regato, Indianapolis, Ind., and Darlene (Schmahl) Becker, Juda

A huge blossom goes out to all the coaches who have helped with a Girls Softball team and Little League team for the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department this summer. This is a huge blossom to all the generous people involved in our 4th GCHS and ENAH Spay/Neuter Day, held on July 30. The day went so very well. An important community service was performed and we had fun to boot! Twenty-eight cats were altered on July 30 and, to date, about 120 total cats have been altered at the four spay/neuter days we have held. Once again, blossoms to Sherri Fiduccia for generously donating the use of Monroe Auto Sales. We could hardly think of a better location for a spay/neuter day! This blossom also goes to the United Way for funding the portion of the event that covers Green County people in need. And it goes to our anonymous sponsor who donated the funds for the Lafayette County half of the expense. We have had terrific sponsors and only hope that we keep getting more.

A blossom goes to Chris Reis, Rhonda Schwarze and Ralph Sheffer for providing lots of delicious food for the team members and volunteers. Thank you to our GCHS and ENAH team members Paul Barrett, Cara Miller, Chris Reis, Emily Seivers, Barb Smith and Heidi Treuthardt. We had several fantastic volunteers that day, Lucy Etter, Leasha Ladow, Sharissy Ling Lee, Sarah Rhoe, John Rosa, Ralph Sheffer and Rachel Thompson. Thank you so much!

We send a blossom up to Madison, to the DCHS SOS team who performed the high volume surgeries. And last but absolutely not least, I send a big blossom to the two veterinarians Dr. Amy Hagen and Dr. Lisa Holcomb who have taken turns being our vets on call after our four spay/neuter days. They are two incredibly generous people with big hearts. Thank you to all! - Peggy Miller Sheffer, president, ENAH, Inc., www.everyoneneedsahome.org

Vendors of Monroe's Market on the Square would like to extend a huge Green County blossom during National Farmers' Market Week (Aug. 1 to 7). We appreciate the outstanding support we have received from the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, Green County (especially Mike Doyle and workers at the Courthouse), City of Monroe, Pro-Build (use of Garden Haus), GC Humane Society, and last, but certainly not least, our customers. Your support is crucial to our ability to grow and prosper and we look forward to seeing you each market day with fresh local products. - Kurt R. Kline, Market on the Square Subcommittee Chairman

A barb to Alderman Mike Rivers for his unexpected resignation from the city council. In reading his comments on the reasons, we are not surprised. What was surprising was the fact that these were the reasons that he ran for this office. Too bad he could not have given it more time. Maybe you should've talked to the people of Monroe instead of letting the "good old boys" discourage you into giving up.

A blossom to Alderman Mike Rivers for trying to turn the changes at city hall. We all understand the thinking of the council. It was refreshing to see some new thinking on the board. We only wish that Mr. Rivers would have waited until April when the other members of the council come up for re-election. The citizens of Monroe are asking for fiscal responsibility and change and it will show up in next spring's elections, just as it did this last spring. The changes this past spring were not huge in numbers but we could all see that the new members had a few alderman that had their same thinking. They were not in the majority but that's hope that in the spring we can do some additional house cleaning. Monroe will be better served with some fresh views instead of the same old same old. If you see Mr. Rivers on the street, tell him that we appreciate what he tried to do. - Hope for the future
