Blossoms and Barbs: Feb. 26, 2011

A big barb to the teachers and state employees protesting in Madison. Those cry babies don't appreciate how well off they are. Our daughter is employed as a medical technologist in the Milwaukee area. Her health insurance premiums are nearly $400 per month with a $4,000 deductible. Would the protesters be willing to exchange benefits with her? Get a life. - A taxpayer

A blossom to the unknown person who was kind enough to snow blow our sidewalk the day of the blizzard. Many thanks to you thoughtful actions! - Green Haven Family Advocates

A big barb to the students who walked out of class in Monroe. You are students - you cant just walk out of class and school. They should be in huge trouble - Doug Baum

•••

A huge blossom to Scott Walker for being a politician with the intestinal fortitude to make the tough decisions and stick to your campaign promises. You are on the fast track to becoming the finest governor this great state has ever seen. Dave: I agree with you on a bypass around Brodhead ... but honestly, there is not near enough traffic on the stretch of highway between Monroe and Brodhead to warrant four lanes. - Greg

Another barb against the Brodhead mayor and city council for nickel and diming the taxpayers to death with oiled pea gravel streets. Oiled pea graveled streets are nothing but a temporary cover up for the problems that a street has. It is cosmetic. In two to three months, the problems begin to reappear and an oiled pea gravel street has a maximum of two to three years before it needs to be done again. It does nothing for the depressions and dips in streets that fill up with melted snow or rainwater that floods them. It is cheaper and wiser in the long run to invest preferably in concrete streets that last on average 40 to 50 years or longer or blacktop streets that last an average of at least 20 years with little maintenance. Average streets means side streets with no truck traffic and not built on wetlands. Concrete streets are engineered for proper drainage and blacktop streets should and usually are also engineered for proper drainage. Concrete streets built by the WPA in the 1930s lasted well into the 1970s and some into the 1980s. Most of Brodhead's streets were dirt, then gravel until they were oiled pea graveled. All great civilization and empires fell from within because they failed to invest in and maintain their infrastructures. This resulted in them being conquered or collapsing. America is doomed to the same fate if it does not invest in and properly maintain its infrastructure. - Dave Searles

A huge barb to Dave Searles. Just once, it would be nice to read the paper without seeing him complain about something. If he feels so strongly, perhaps he should channel his energy into running for a local office. - John

We would like to send a blossom to The Friends of Cadiz Springs and Brennan's Market for sponsoring the walk and wine tasting event on Saturday. Cadiz Springs Park is a local treasure. What a good way to experience it. - Annette Holmstrom

A huge barb to the stoned kids who struck and killed our 13-year-old collie (last) Monday evening. A blossom to Jake Boss for digging her grave. Also thanks for the five cats dropped off for us in May 2009. I thought we had a Humane Society. Guess it's on Melvin Road where we have five cats and no dog. Way to go Monroe.
