Blossom & Barbs: Nov. 6, 2010

A big barb to the five high school kids that came back to my house after I went back inside and took at least $10 worth of candy and the basket that the candy was in. I have used that basket for more than 15 years to hand out candy to all the kids that visit our house. If they wanted to take candy away from any other kids that may have come after them fine, by greedy, but why did they have to take the basket? I placed candy outside at our house in Milwaukee and never had it stolen. I never expected something like this in Monroe. I hope these kids grow up. - Upset 13th Street Resident

A big beautiful blossom to all the kind people that have taken care of the flowers in the planters around the Square. This included watering and trimming on a regular basis to keep the pots looking good which was not an easy job during the long, hot, dry summer months. Special thanks to the business owners, volunteers and members of the Monroe Woman's Club who helped with the planting. The flowers are being removed now and replaced with evergreen boughs and colorful festive bows for the Christmas season. Thank you for your time and interest as the planters add so much to the attractiveness of the downtown. - Design Committee, Monroe Main Street

We would like to extend a grateful blossom to all the citizens of Monroe who helped make the first "Halloween for Hunger" food drive such a success. We are particularly thankful for the Project World students who sacrificed their trick-or-treating time to benefit others, the parents who helped deliver the food to the pantry, The Monroe Times for covering the event, and especially all the community members who gave from their hearts, pocketbooks, and kitchen shelves. Working together, we were able to collect 1,207 pounds of food for the Green County Food Pantry to help our neighbors in need. What giving role models you all were for our youth! - Deb Freitag and Nadine Whiteman

A barb to the Green County Highway Shop and Dick Marty. We called him at the shop to tell him that putting a snow fence on Wisconsin 39 next to us on the south side was not working there. We are on a huge hill and our winds and snow come from the west, north and sometimes east. He argued that we were wrong. After living on this state highway for more than 17 years, we can tell you where it drifts. The worst spot I told him was at the first corner coming out of New Glarus by the red shed. He still insisted that he knew better. Also, I asked why is our snow plow driver enjoying plugging the end of our driveway? We have had other drivers and they were excellent about not pushing all the snow they can in the driveway. My husband stands down there shoveling it out and she comes by smiling and does it again. Also what is up about not picking up the dead animals anymore on the roads? How much time would it be to take a shovel and throw it off the road, like they use to. - Sherrie Benson

A blossom to all who got out and voted on election day. What's interesting though, is that in countries like Iraq, where they run the risk of being shot at or blown up or kidnapped and tortured, 90 percent of their citizens show up and yet in the Land of the Free, only 50 percent show up. Maybe we need to work on changing this.

A blossom to the class the politicians displayed during their concession or acceptance speeches. Now, if they could just do that during the campaign cycle. I wonder what George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Abe Lincoln would think of "Politics as Usual" now.

A blossom to the many people in this county who help out the less fortunate. It doesn't matter if it's the members of a church, social workers, police and fire, or the regular person that offers and volunteers their time, money or items, there are some awesome people in this community and the surrounding area !

A blossom to the Green County Dairy Queens for their community projects that they do, and for displaying class, poise, pride and always doing so with a smile on their face. These gals, along with the Beef and Pork Princesses are out and about not only promoting the largest industry in this area, but also bring a little sunshine to enrich peoples lives.

And finally, a blossom to the local businesses and service groups that support our local economy and our youth programs. Without you we fail, with you we continue the proud traditions and bring forth new leadership and ideas. - Jeff Ditzenberger

We would like to extend a huge blossom to Wal-Mart. Jeff Scheuerell and his team helped to make our 1st Annual YMCA Fall FunRaiser a huge success. Not only did they contribute valuable donations, they also provided 20 volunteers to help out on the evening of the event. The professionalism demonstrated by Jeff and his team was extraordinary. They were eager to help and easy to work with. They jumped right in where ever they were needed, and their level of efficiency was tremendous. What a wonderful way to help support a local organization. Thank you, Wal-Mart. - The YMCA Fall FunRaiser Committee

A barb to "Citizen" who claimed righteous indignation for President Barack Obama's campaigning for Democratic candidates across the USA. You act like he is first President to do so. I am over 60, and don't remember a sitting president not campaigning. Did you just start paying attention to politics the last year or so? If so, you missed the eight years before President Obama where that sitting president frittered away a surplus in the budget, to leave the current president the biggest deficit ever. Maybe he needs more than 18 months to clean up eight years of failed policies and wasteful spending. How did those trickle down economics work for you? - Knowledgeable Citizen

A beautiful bouquet of blossoms to those who took the time to vote! The Republicans won out this round for a very simple reason that most people are either choosing to ignore or just don't understand. All of the polls since Obama took office indicated that the American public wanted Washington to focus on the economy. Instead, the Democrats largely ignored the economy, and instead, focused on the health care bill which more than 60 percent of Americans were against. The simple answer as to why the Republicans did so well is because the Democrats did not follow what the vast majority of the American public wanted. I guess that is how democracy is supposed to work, so it should be viewed as a good thing. I really don't think this has anything to do with carryover problems from the previous administration. - The reason is simple

A huge blossom to the New Glarus-Monticello football players and coaches on a great season. They did a great job representing themselves, their school, and their community on and off the field. Congratulations Knights! - NGM supporter

A blossom to Brodhead-Juda head coach Jim Matthys, his staff, and his players for excellent sportsmanship in the Level 2 playoff game. - Football fan
