To the editor:
I thought McCarthy-ism was dead but a couple of letters recently published makes me wonder. As Hitler's Goebels said "if you tell a lie often enough, people will believe it." I can remember Joe McCarthy waving a sheet of paper in a Virginia speech which he said contained a list of communists in Congress. No names were ever produced, but the list persisted.
One letter stated the writer worked in a city "no name," where all of his fellow workers were communists again "no names." Can you imagine a city having all communists? Mind-boggling. Aspersions were made against our president, strictly opinion, no facts. Apparently the writer didn't watch President Obama at the United Nations where all the members broke into applause many times indicating how well he is received around the world. A statement was made that it cost $49,000 to build a Chevrolet. When you can buy one at that price, it makes Chevrolet look stupid to sell cars for what it costs to build one.
I guess I am one of Mitt's 47 percent. I started working in 1936 at 18 cents per hour, and 1 percent was deducted for Social Security. I attended the University of Texas where out of state tuition was $100 per semester. I graduated the University of Wisconsin with a degree in economics where semester costs were under $30 per semester. The cost of building a great university was paid for with taxpayer money.
I spent four years in the Army, paid by the taxpayers. I drive on highways built by taxpayer money. I utilize the V.A. facilities along with thousands of other G.I.'s paid for by taxpayer money.
I started paying income tax in 1946, and in a very small way helped pay for the education of millions of G.I.'s who went to college at government expense.
I will soon by 92 years old, and I can't wait to vote. You can probably tell who I will vote for, but to the other citizens of Green County, it is your right and duty to vote. Let your conscience be your guide, but vote.
