From Susie Speer

Executive Director, United Way of Green County, Inc.

To the editor,

This year's United Way campaign theme challenged us all to "Find Our Inner Hero" and to provide help for those needing it in our community.

Employees of Colony Brands and Monroe Clinic certainly stepped up to meet that challenge, each holding record-setting campaigns to support the United Way in its work to provide vital services for families and individuals throughout Green County.

Recognizing the need for local programs that provide help every day to people in our community, these two area businesses supported the efforts of their employees as they worked to raise the most money they have ever raised in a United Way campaign. Colony Brands and Monroe Clinic employees each increased their largest previous United Way campaigns by more than 7 percent with the individual campaigns of each company reaching nearly $68,000.

It doesn't take a cape and goggles or a special uniform to be a super hero; it takes caring about the needs of people in our community and doing what you can to help. We salute Colony Brands, Monroe Clinic and their employees for serving as "heroes" to those needing help in our community.

The current United Way campaign will support more than 40 local programs working to provide important help to people in every Green County community. The campaign has currently reached 93 percent of its $275,000 goal. In order to fully fund allocations to these community programs in 2012, the United Way must raise an additional $20,000.

Contributions to the United Way of Green County stay in Green County and are invested carefully and systematically in programs that work to:

- Strengthen and support families

- Empower children and youth to succeed

- Encourage self-sufficiency

- Support our disabled and aging populations and

- Help people meet their basic needs for food, clothing and shelter
