Baldwin supports tax cuts for middle class

To the editor:

Tammy Baldwin is the person in the race for the U.S. Senate who is looking to cut taxes and restore economic security and growth opportunities to Wisconsin's middle class.

Baldwin has a strong record of voting for tax breaks that help out middle class families and small businesses in Wisconsin, including the child care tax credit; expanded student loan interest deduction; tax credits for hiring veterans; increasing lending to and lowering taxes for small businesses; and a plan to extend the Bush tax cuts for 97 percent of small businesses and 98 percent of American families.

Baldwin is a strong voice for identifying and forwarding new tax legislation to restore economic security and growth opportunities to the middle class: Baldwin is co-sponsor of the "Bring Jobs Home Act," an act that would give a tax break to business owners of companies who relocate their companies to the United States and would eliminate a tax break for owners of companies that outsource jobs. Baldwin is also the lead sponsor in the House of Representatives of "Buffett Rule" legislation that would require those with incomes over $1 million per year to pay at least the same tax rates as the middle class.

The Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, Tommy Thompson, opposes the "Buffett Rule." Thompson supports the Romney/Ryan plan which would give individuals making over $1 million a year an average extra tax cut of $265,000 and is projected to increase taxes of millions of middle class taxpayers. A Joint Economic Committee analysis of the Romney/Ryan plan found, for example, that under the Romney/Ryan supported by Thompson, a typical household earning between $50,000 and $100,000 and filing jointly would face a tax increase of $1,358 and that households with incomes between $100,000 and $200,000 would face a tax increase of $2,681.

Wisconsin voters have a clear choice on taxes this election year. Tammy Baldwin has my support for U.S. Senate because she is doing what she can to cut taxes and restore economic security and growth opportunities to the middle class. I'm confident that she will continue to be a strong and effective voice for Wisconsin's small businesses and middle class families if elected to the U.S. Senate.
