Assembly GOP fails to ease economic woes

There have been a lot of stories in the news recently about the problems with our financial system, and I'm writing because I think you've missed an important aspect of this crisis. I believe we must hold our representatives in the government responsible for their part in this mess.

In particular, I've been concerned for some time by the economic policies put forth by the Republican majority in the Wisconsin Assembly. The Republicans in Madison recently stopped a bill that would have invested in "green" jobs here in Wisconsin, and they killed a bill that would have stopped taxpayer dollars from going to contracts with companies that ship jobs overseas. As the financial crisis grew, they even had the gall to try and remove the anti-gouging law that protects consumers by preventing unscrupulous business owners from raising prices more than 10 percent in a panic situation.

Now, our representative, Brett Davis, has voted with these Assembly Republicans 97 percent of the time. In fact, Davis even voted against a bill that made sure businesses that went bankrupt had to pay their workers their full wages before they paid back any loans or other debts (AB-403).

So, I think it's about time for a change to our representation in the Legislature. I recommend that you give John Waelti and the Democrats a chance to do some good by voting for them in the election this November. John is an economist by trade, so he's exactly the type of person we want at the helm in a financial crisis. John and the Democrats also have promised to work across the Wisconsin government to make economic relief their top priority. So, I hope you'll vote John Waelti for Assembly on Nov. 4.
