Appreciate what our government does for us

The other day a caller on Wisconsin Public Radio was talking to an economist and he said that the Republicans like to say that everyone knows that the government doesn't create jobs, only free enterprise does and he'd like to correct that myth because government creates jobs and that he worked for the government. The economist agreed with him. One of the biggest employment is that of the military.

Also an article I read in the July/August 2010 issue, when President Franklin Roosevelt, over a period of eight years, employed 8.5 million people. One of the larger projects was construction of San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, longest suspension bridge in the world, which took four years to complete. This was done through WPA (Works Progress Administration). After unemployment fell under two percent in our country, the program was ended.

So, for all these politicians that are running against the government so they can get into government, they should realize we need a balance between free enterprise and government. Not extremes either way. We should have had better regulations on the banks concerning home loans, tougher oversight on oil companies to make sure they had the protection to stop accidents quicker than what BP did in the Gulf of Mexico, even FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in making sure our food and medicines are safe.

This is why we need our three branches of government, creating a balance, that we don't get a dictatorship. Why does someone running for office have to be a millionaire before he can run? You can't say that just because they're wealthy they're the most intelligent people. Look at Bernie Madoff, Kenneth Lay and many others they could have prosecuted earlier if the government would have wanted to. It usually ends up in a small fine and they're let go.

If you have enough money to hire a good lawyer, and they don't come cheap, you can just about get away with anything, including murder, which is now taking place along the Mexican border, concerning the drug trade. So, appreciate what the government is doing for you and realize one is going to have to pay a fair rate of federal income tax, based on ability to pay and creating a government we could all be proud of.
