To the editor,
As a council member for the last seven years, I have served with Mayors Bill Ross and Ron Marsh, both whom I respect and get along with. Although we have disagreed on some things, we always work it out and work as a team.
Since mayoral candidate Michael Boyce has been on council, there has been tension amongst alders.
Although Michael has worked hours on city matters, his way of dealing with others is that of intimidation, and bullying. He threatened one alder for the way she voted, which resulted in a letter to him to stay away. He also yelled at two other alders for the way they voted. He bullied a local housing authority director.
Mr. Boyce put together his own budget which shows defunding of all operational expenses for the senior center, city clerk, treasurer, and administrator.
Mr. Boyce supports the closing of the Green County Transfer Station by privatizing garbage pickup affecting all the townships and towns in Green County. Privatization has proven over time to raise rates to the public.
During the budget process, Michael has favored the elimination of key personnel. He has the department heads and staff on edge wondering if their jobs are safe.
Council member Thurston Hanson has been on council for six years and has managed to alienate quite a few people. He has been known to attack a council member on a social network and in public with name calling and accusations because of the way that person votes.
When the council was deciding whether to stay with the current ward system or change to the at-large system, Mr. Hanson did a double flip-flop. He started wanting the at-large system. When a vote came, he changed his mind to the ward system because two of his constituents were there. When the next public hearing was held, he changed back again to the at-large system. When it appeared that Mr. Hanson was not going to get the results he wanted on council, he pushed for more public hearings.
After residents downtown complained about noise of early morning trash pickup, a noise ordinance was proposed. Mr. Hanson was not in favor of this. It was only after he found a petition from building owners on the Square in his ward at his council seat the night of the vote that he decided to vote for it. Please vote for civility.
