Most of the many comments weve received so far about our redesigned Web site has been complimentary.
There have been a few constructive criticisms, as well. And thats great! That helps us improve the site where we can.
One of the most frequent questions Ive received thus far is ... what happened to all of the obituary archives?
The short answer is that theyve gone away, for now. But theyll be back within the next few weeks.
Our old Web site did not have story archives. News and sports stories that were posted to the site disappeared after three days. Theyd still be in there somewhere, but youd have to know the specific code to get there. There were no searchable archives.
But we kept obituaries on the site for a few years for visitors to access.
No archives from the old site transferred over to our new one. There is a process that will occur shortly, and take a few months to complete, of moving all Times stories in our office archives which go back to 2002 into the archives of our new online product.
Until then, the only way we have of putting all of those obituaries that were on the old site onto the new one would be to manually create story files for each obituary and post it. Obviously, that would be a task requiring a lot of man hours.
But if enough people request that we do that as soon as possible, I just might do it. Consider the can of worms opened!
