Todays print edition of The Monroe Times includes the annual Mindset List from Beloit College.
Youve probably seen or heard of this list before: Every year, Beloit College compiles a list of things the incoming freshmen class is too young to remember. Its entertaining to read if you enjoy feeling really old.
For example, the Class of 2014, mostly born in 1992, doesnt remember phones with coiled cords (Im guessing they wouldnt recognize a rotary dial phone either) and never saw John McEnroes temper tantrums on the professional tennis circuit. They dont remember when three networks dominated broadcast news, or a time when people drank coffee that tasted like coffee.
While its fun to reminisce about the good old days I cant believe the 1980s are now considered the good old days how much do these differences pointed out by the Mindset List really matter?
Are we doomed because the younger generation would rather text than write a hand-written letter? And are we better or worse off because young people dont wear wristwatches anymore?
