Reader comments about doctor's exit

Our Web site has been busy since Saturday with reader comments about Dr. James Turek leaving Monroe Clinic. As of Monday, the popular OB/GYN no longer was employed by the Clinic.

The first comment was made Saturday to the story Blossoms & Barbs: Jan. 31, 2009, posted as a barb to Monroe Clinic. Dozens of comments have been submitted since.

Some of the submissions havent been posted, because they make assumptions or allegations that simply cant be confirmed and would be unfair to make public. Theres a lot of speculating going on, and Id prefer to avoid that on our site. Its not fair to either the Clinic or Dr. Turek.

One reader commented that they had heard the Times was working on a story. How that word got out I dont know, but it was correct. We are planning to have a story ready for Thursdays edition.

But dont expect a bunch of details about what happened to lead to Dr. Tureks departure. The Clinic wont say much of anything, as is to be expected. Its a personnel issue, and the Clinic considers all employee matters to be confidential. And our reporter hasnt been able to talk to Dr. Turek.

There was some discussion at the Times about whether to allow any of the comments about Dr. Tureks exit to be posted online. It is, after all, a private personnel matter.

But we did have confirmation that Dr. Turek no longer was working at the Clinic. And the fact of the matter is that doctors are in very public positions, and our readers have more than a passing interest in who their health care providers are. Theres a reason that health care systems promote the arrivals of new doctors. In this case, the publics interest superseded the privacy of the personnel matter.
