No school, no game?

Many people assume that when a school cancels classes for the day due to inclement weather, its sporting events for that evening also are postponed. That is not the case.

Today, every school in the district canceled classes because of the continued brutal wind chills this morning. And rightfully so. The wind chills still were reaching about 45 below zero in the hours children would have been getting to school.

The wind chill warning ends at noon today, but its still going to be bitterly cold tonight. Wind chills are expected to remain below zero until Saturday morning. But the chill wont be quite as bad as it was this morning, so some sporting events are going on as planned. The Monroe girls will be hosting Madison Edgewood; the Pecatonica boys are hosting River Ridge; and the Darlington wrestlers are hosting Palmyra-Eagle.

Ive heard some people say that if the weathers bad enough to not have school, then they shouldnt play the games, either. In general, I agree with that. But conditions can change, and if the weather is more conducive to travel at night than in the morning, then by all means play the games. Its Wisconsin, after all. There are enough games postponed because of weather. Best to get them in when you can.

But what do you think? If school is canceled, should the sporting event be called off, as well?
