What a season for Monroe sports!
First, there were state tournament berths in both boys and girls basketball, with the girls winning a Division 2 championship.
Now, the Monroe girls also have qualified for the state tournament in softball. The Lady Cheesemakers did it in nail-biting fashion, first preventing the potential winning run by Prairie du Chien in the top of the seventh inning then scoring the game's only run in the first extra session, the eighth inning.
Monroe next plays Rice Lake at 8 p.m. - yes, 8 p.m. - next Friday night in Madison. The Times will be there, of course, and have a photo gallery for our Web site the next day win or lose. We'll also work feverishly and quickly to make sure to get a story and photos into Saturday's paper before deadline ... that is, as long as the weather cooperates. Late-night rain showers would not be good.
Our sports staff also will be working hard between now and next Thursday to put together a special section that previews next weekend's state tournament and reviews the Lady Cheesemakers' season thus far. You can look for that in next Thursday's (June 5) newspaper and online editions of The Monroe Times.
