Making our test runs

Were beginning our test runs this week of moving to a night-time production schedule at the Times. This is in preparation for the shift to daily delivery via the U.S. Postal Service, which begins with the April 27 edition.

This means that our news staff, myself included, are working a night shift. News and sports pages are finished at night, with a 12:30 a.m. completion deadline. This began with work Sunday night for todays newspaper.

The major difference for us is that our pages now will be worked on late at night as opposed to ridiculously early in the morning. There will be virtually no difference in the local news content. Sports will have an extra half-hour to get its pages done. News reporters will have a little less time to put together stories on deadline from meetings.

Because we havent yet changed our obituaries deadline to accommodate the new production schedule, Im still coming in at about 8 a.m. this week to finish off the days paper. So my schedule will be a bit goofy like it isnt usually! If my blogs get a little loopy toward the end of the week, I have an excuse that I dont necessarily have in other weeks.

If you have any questions about editorial content in advance of our switch to same-day mail delivery next week, post a comment below and Ill answer them if I can.
