After winning 63-47 at Black Hawk on Thursday night, Pecatonica sophomore Kimee Chandler said:
Its just really nice to get a win here because its really tough to win here.
Im sure the Vikings point guard said that sentiment because the South Wayne confines are cramped and get very boisterous in a rivalry tilt like Pecatonica vs. Black Hawk.
Still, my mind did sway to the fact that maybe she said that because the kids run rampant at games in South Wayne, unlike any of the other venues I go to within The Monroe Times coverage area. Maybe that was what makes it really tough to win at Black Hawk.
At one juncture in the second half, two kids ran right between a referee and Pecatonica senior Danielle Senf as the ref was about to hand her the ball to inbound. Five minutes later, a little girl ran directly into my legs along the sidelines as the action was on the opposite end and I was trying to make notes.
Numerous times, while the ball was in play, kids run just inside the court down the sidelines and could easily be taken out by a steal and fastbreak heading that way.
Why cant these kids sit still and enjoy a great game of basketball like the Vikings and Warriors provide each time they take the court? And where are the parents who brought these kids into the school? I know the kids didnt drive themselves over on the slippery road surfaces.
I dont mean to bash South Wayne, because the kids of Monroe are just as frustrating, but in a different way. Ive been to all seven Cheesemaker home game this season and at every one, during the second half, I hear:
Hey! Camera guy! Camera guy! Hey! Can you take our picture?! Can you put us in the paper?!
No, Im not going to put you in the paper.
If this were the state tournament, sure Ill take your picture and youll probably get in the paper. Thats a good picture because its got it all; atmosphere, town pride, jubilation.
But, this is a nonconference game against Reedsburg. Youre not getting in the paper. So, please just leave me alone and rock along with Dee Snider and Twisted Sister and watch Mitch Tordoff hit 3-pointers.
