It's St. Patrick's Day today. I've work a green dress shirt to work today. But even that doesn't make it feel at all like a holiday, or day of celebration. The green is in heavy rotation among my dress shirts, so nothing feels out of the ordinary.
Monroe seems to celebrate St. Patrick's Day a little more than other communities. But on the whole it seems to me like St. Patty's Day just ain't what it used to be.
Maybe it's because I've gotten older. There was a time when I would celebrate St. Pat's Day like others, with a few adult beverages. But not much of the green beer, though. I just can't eat or drink things that are green when they're not supposed to be. And not corned beef and cabbage, either. Yuck.
But St. Patrick's Day used to be an event for me. Not anymore.
It's mostly just another day for me now. If I celebrate at all, it will be with a Shamrock Shake from McDonald's. But even that's a longshot today, I'd say.
Today didn't seem to carry much luck with it here at work, either. We had yet another newsroom member go down with the ick that seems to be going around. And our printers inexplicably stopped working correctly this morning. It was the kind of morning that reminded me that Murphy's Law is named after an Irishman.
But we did get a paper out today, and in it we have a story about an inaugural St. Patrick's Celtic Pub Crawl, which drew an impressive crowd of about 200 people on Saturday. The event at local bars sounds like I would have enjoyed in my days of celebrating St. Patrick's Day. Reading it actually made me long for those days a little bit.
This afternoon, there will be a St. Patrick's Day parade in downtown Monroe.
So it seems there still are some St. Patrick's Day enthusiasts out there.
