Finding time to blog

Its been a while since Ive blogged.

The new schedule here at the Times has taken some getting used to, I admit. For months, I was waking up at 3 a.m. every morning. For the past month, Ive been going to bed at about 3 a.m. six nights a week. It takes some getting used to.

And just as my 43-year-old body is trying to get used to the new routines, so too is my workflow schedule. The biggest casualty so far, probably, has been the blog. I havent figured out a good time to write it. So tonight Im trying it after deadline.

Weve been finished with our news pages for about an hour. And as midnight approaches, our sports department is furiously working to get their pages completed. Their last page has to be finished by 12:30 p.m.

Track nights are the hardest on deadlines for our sports department. The later it gets in the season, the longer the track meets last. And the less time we have to get completed stories and results in the paper. Friday night will be interesting, with teams competing in regionals to qualify for next weekends state meet.

Tonight, our sports department not only had regional track to cover, but also the second round of softball regionals and a tennis sub-sectional, along with a handful of other sports. The guys will have to keep up this pace for at least another couple of weeks, then theres a bit of a break before teams start practicing for fall sports and we start again!

Received an e-mail tonight from a reader who wants to know how the projected cuts in education spending at the state level will impact Monroes schools. Its a good question well try to answer soon. Well also try to see how some of the area schools will be impacted.

Well be working Wednesday on a story or two previewing this weekends Green County Breakfast on the Farm. That will be in Thursdays edition. Its yet another welcome sign that summers just around the corner!
