I am sure its a sign of aging, because ...
...when I was a kid, I dont remember getting out of school so often for weather issues.
It was right around deadline this (Tuesday) morning when the news started to pour in of early school closings and sports cancellations. Of course, for seemingly the 27th time in the past couple of weeks since we went live with our new Web site, we were posting breaking news about the weather.
I looked outside my office window and saw ... nothing.
I know the weathers supposed to turn nasty tonight. I know its turning colder, and its supposed to snow 1 to 3 inches, and the winds going to start whipping that stuff around. I know theres a Winter Storm Warning for the region, as well as a Wind Chill Warning.
But its not here, yet. And when I was a kid, I dont remember school ever being let out early or canceled because something MIGHT happen. We were never so lucky, or at least I dont recall that we were.
Last week, admittedly it was cold. Real cold. The wind chills were 30 below zero. The thermometer on the van read 20 below as I drove to work in the dark of morning. And Freeport schools, where I live, called off school.
And for seemingly the 27th time of the winter season, my wife and I were discussing how we were going to handle having four kids at home. And, at work, I was ranting about the Freeport schools and how quick they were to drop school for the day. I was aggravated by the fact that at the band concert the night before, students were talking about not being in school the next day because the teachers already had prepared them for it.
(For the record, I looked once at the Freeport school year calendar. Of the 40 weeks they are in session, only half of them are full weeks. THAT never happened when I was a kid, either, Im sure.)
Anyway, Im sure there are more legal reasons for schools to close earlier today than they did when I was in fifth grade. Maybe the weather has gotten worse, with global warming and all.
But it just seems to me that schools gets out too early, and too often these days.
But then I could be wrong.
What do you think?
